EYE TO THE FUTURE

It would appear that the best is yet to come from exciting young sire Kodi Bear.

A leading first and second crop sire, the talented son of Kodiac impressed many by upgrading his first mares, which yielded three Group 1 performers, each of whom were the first black-type produce of their dams. Additionally, four of his Stakes performers are out of maiden or unraced mares.

Breeders’ took note of his early success at stud, resulting in quality books of Black Type mares being covered in recent seasons which include: the dams of Classic performers and Group winners and half sisters to Group 1/Group 2 winners.

The dam of multiple Stakes-placed Helens Well has since returned to the sire, as have the dams of Epsom Oaks runner-up Mystery Angel, Group 1 sprinter Measure Of Magic and unbeaten Stakes winner Diablotine.

Kodi Bear remains as popular with buyers as breeders, with his yearlings selling for up to 210,000gns in 2022. Purchasers of his yearlings in 2022 included: Kevin Ryan, Marco Bozzi, Nick Bradley Racing, Charlie Gordon Watson Bloodstock, Peter & Ross Doyle Bloodstock, Joe Foley, Jason Kelly Bloodstock/Sean Quinn, etc. His proven horses were also in demand, commanding prices up to £340,000.

Group 2 Winning Juvenile Go Bears Go proved himself a class performer at three, winning the Group 3 Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes and the Phoenix Sprint Stakes collecting second in between to the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup victor Minzaal. Ever Given was another that impressed in 2022 when winning the Listed Surrey Stakes and placing in both the Group 3 Qatar Prix Du Pin and Criterion Stakes.

'DIABLOTINE, Winner of the Prix du Début by more than 5 lengths ahead of Miramar (Profitable), which has since won, Diablotine was the logical favourite for the race. It was 200m from the finish that Mickaël Barzalona's partner Diaboltine easily took the measure of her opponents to pass the post two and a half lengths in front.'
